Freshwater Pearls

Sophie Bille Brahe’s love of pearls derives from their association with the moon. Each pearl carries a sense of time, movement and transformation, shaped slowly by water, light and nature.

Our pearls are freshwater cultured pearls from China, formed inside molluscs where layer upon layer of nacre, the iridescent mother-of-pearl, is deposited around a core. Every layer is microscopic; it takes more than 1,000 layers to create just 0.5 mm of pearl. The result is a surface that glows from within, revealing depth, softness and subtle individuality.

Quality & Selection

We exclusively work with AAA–AA grade pearls, selected for their exceptional lustre, shape and surface quality. Pearl grading is based on five key criteria: lustre, shape, colour, surface and size. The AAA–AA scale is one of the most widely recognised systems, with AAA representing the highest grade.

A perfectly round, white AAA pearl is exceptionally rare, fewer than one in one hundred meet this standard. Each pearl is carefully assessed and only those with the finest balance of brilliance, harmony and character are chosen. Subtle blemishes and natural markings are not flaws, but proof of authenticity and the pearl’s natural formation.

Lustre & Colour

Lustre is the soul of a pearl. It is created by the way light reflects from both the surface and the inner nacre layers, producing a soft glow and mirror-like depth. Colour varies naturally depending on the mollusc, but we always select pearls with rich, even tones and a luminous finish.

Time & Care

Freshwater pearls typically take 2 to 5 years to form, depending on size and quality. Their organic nature makes them delicate, they should be worn with care, protected from chemicals, and gently wiped after use to preserve their natural glow.

Each pearl is a living trace of time, imperfect, luminous, and entirely unique.

Diamonds

Sophie Bille Brahe is drawn to diamonds not as symbols of status, but for their quiet strength, beauty, and sense of eternity. Drawing from her long-term fascination with the night sky, she sees diamonds as the stars. Formed deep within the earth over billions of years, each diamond is shaped by pressure, heat, and time, a rare expression of nature’s own design.

Our diamonds are selected for their exceptional brilliance and purity. Every stone is chosen to reflect light with clarity and depth, refined, luminous, and enduring.

Quality

All Sophie Bille Brahe diamonds are graded at the highest end of industry standards. Certified Top Wesselton with VVS clarity, each stone delivers exceptional brilliance and exquisite refinement.

Certification & Authenticity

Diamonds of 0.30 carat and above are accompanied by an official GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Diamond Grading Report, providing an independent, expert assessment of the diamond’s 4Cs, proportions, fluorescence, and unique report number.

Each Sophie Bille Brahe piece also comes with an Authenticity Card, guaranteeing that all materials are genuine and that the jewellery is crafted to our exacting standards.

Responsibility & Traceability

All our diamonds are sourced in accordance with the Kimberley Process and adhere to the Responsible Jewellery Council’s Code of Practices.

We are continuously working to improve diamond origin transparency. Currently, all diamonds above 0.30 carat are delivered with a country of origin.

Recycled Gold

Gold is the foundation of every piece, chosen not only for its beauty and strength, but for the values it represents.

All our jewellery is crafted from 100% certified recycled gold, obtained by refining and repurposing previously mined gold. Through a blockchain-based chain of custody, each gram is fully traceable and guaranteed not to be mixed with newly mined material.

Recycled gold is identical in purity, durability, and appearance to newly mined gold. By reusing existing resources, we reduce pressure on gold mining and its associated impacts, including deforestation, water pollution, carbon emissions, and social risks.

Our recycled gold is sourced exclusively from Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)–certified suppliers, ensuring high standards for transparency, ethical labour practices, and environmental responsibility.

At the same time, we recognise that recycled gold may not be the perfect solution. We remain transparent about these limitations and continuously engage with our partners to monitor, verify, and improve our sourcing practices. Our approach is one of ongoing responsibility: to make the most considered choices available today, while actively working towards better alternatives for tomorrow.

Our white gold is created by alloying recycled gold with silver and zinc. To achieve its luminous silvery finish, each piece is rhodium-plated, enhancing brightness and providing added surface protection.
